The Weitzan Family

Amichai (הי"ד)

Yisrael Amichai Amichai was born to Shomon Yosef and Rachel in April 1990 in
Psagot. There studied and was educated at the high school in Dimona, loved
traveling around the country, and was involved in agriculture. One of his hobbies
 was bringing joy to people.

Yisrael Amichai married Talia, and they had five children:
Tzur, Kerem, Uri, Ruth, and Shachar.

The family settled in Kibbutz Kerem Shalom in the Gaza Envelope, a mixed
kibbutz of religious and secular members. Amichai studied for a bachelor’s
degree in social work at Ashkelon College.

To Defend the Home

Simchat Torah in Kerem Shalom began with joint celebrations
of all residents and guests, both secular and religious.
After the dancing, everyone dispersed to their homes for a festive meal in
anticipation of the celebrations the following day.

At 6:30 a.m., red alerts sounded and members of the emergency response team
gathered. Amichai Yisrael Weitzan told those present, “This is exactly why we
trained in the emergency response team.” The nine members of the emergency
response team prepared to deploy in the kibbutz along with six soldiers who
reinforced the team. The kibbutz’s rabbi distributed the force into pairs, with
Yedidya and Amichai forming an organic pair. Dozens of terrorists who crossed
the border at the Kerem Shalom crossing broke into the kibbutz and
engaged in fierce battles. The team members eliminated a significant
number of terrorists. The fighting continued for six hours.

In WhatsApp recordings sent by Amichai to his wife during the fighting,
he sounded calm, emphasizing to her to ensure that the children felt good
and danced because it was Simchat Torah and to bring out all the snacks from the kitchen.

After several hours of fighting, terrorists broke into a house and forced their way into the safe room where a family was. Amichai and Yedidya did not think twice; they entered the inferno and drew the fire away from the
family. The family was saved, but they were killed.

The heroism of the fallen fighters is a symbol
 of bravery and self-sacrifice.

Life After Amichai

Amichai left behind his wife Talia and their five children:
Tzur, Karem, Uri, Ruth, and Shachar.

The family resides in Kibbutz Kerem Shalom but have been
evacuated from their home and are houses in the student
village of Ashalim since Simchat Torah
