Saadya Yaakov (הי"ד)
Saadya Yaakov,
the son of Chaim and Leli Deri, was born and raised in Eli, as one of of six
children. Saadya studied at the Hesder Yeshiva in Jaffa. After he enlisted in the
IDF and served in the Alexandroni Battalion of the Golani Brigade.
After his discharge, Saadya married Racheli, and they had two children: Haleli and Yinon.
The family settled in Jaffa, near the yeshiva where Saadya studied
as a scholar. Saadya was studying for rabbinic exams in addition to pursuing a
bachelor’s degree in education.
A fighter
On Simchat Torah, Saadya was called up for reserve duty serving on the northern
border as a soldier in the Alexandroni Battalion of the Golani Brigade.
Later, he was called up for a second round of reserve duty and moved to serve
in the Gaza Strip. Saadya’s unit was tasked with securing the Nitzarim Corridor
in the heart of the Strip.
On June 20, Saadya’s unit was shelled by mortars, and both Saadya and another comrade were killed instantly.
Life After Saadya
Saadya left behind his wife, Racheli, and their two young children:
Haleli, 2 years and Yinon just one year.
