The Greenberg Family
Tomer (הי"ד)
Tomer, was born in November 1998 to Isaac and Adina in Kfar Saba.
He enlisted in the IDF and served in the Golani Brigade. He completed the combat soldier
course, a squad leader course, and an infantry officer course, returning to command a
platoon in the battalion. He then went on to study, completed a company commander course,
and returned to the armored brigade, where he held various positions: training company
commander, operational company commander, Golani reconnaissance commander, Gafni
company commander, area commander 100, and deputy battalion commander of the Golani
reconnaissance unit. His last position in the army was as the commander of Battalion 13 in the
Golani Brigade. Tomer viewed this role as the most important of his life.
Tomer married Ashira, and the couple had a daughter, Arbel.
The family established their home in Kibbutz Almog on the shores of the Dead Sea.
A Fiery Presence Before the Camp
On Simchat Torah Battalion 13 was engaged in in Nahal Oz. Tomer went home
for Shabbat after a long period without rest. Tomer joined his troops in the
field to defend the communities near the Gaza Strip, where he fought
continuously for five days until the area was cleared of Hamas terrorists.
Later, Tomer, along with the battalion commanders and soldiers, was among
the first forces to initiate the operation in the Gaza Strip. Despite the pressure,
he even managed to speak with most of the families of the many fallen in his
brigade, assuring them that he would come to hug them when the war was over.
On December 12 Tomer joined a fighting force of his 9 soldiers who were caught in a confrontation in the Sajaiya neighborhood, where he was injured and fell.
To Save Lives
One of the houses Tomer entered was the home of the Berdichevsky family,
where they found parents Guy and Hadar, who were no longer alive, and in a crib
in the corner, a pair twins, left alone. Tomer wiped away his tears and rushed to
pick up the small infants, running them to safety.
Guy, the father of the twins, was also a Golani Brigade veteran
and a friend of Tomer from military service.
On the day Tomer fell, another circle closed; it was the twins’ birthday,
the ones Tomer saved.
Ashira shares her feelings: “It’s like the transition between Independence Day and Memorial Day; for me, it happens twice a year, both at Tomer’s memorial and on the twins’ birthday.
They are the reason I remember what Tomer fought for.”
Life after Tomer
Tomer left behind his wife Ashira and their daughter Almog,
who recently celebrated her 4th birthday without her father.
The family resides in Kibbutz Almog near the Dead Sea.
